CNA Interview: Allswell Polythene Discusses Plastic Bag Impact and Sustainability
Recently, on 3rd July 2024, Allswell Polythene was featured in an interview with CNA, discussing the impact of the 5-cent plastic bag charge implemented in supermarkets last year. We welcomed the CNA crew to our warehouse, giving them a behind-the-scenes look at our operations. The charge, aimed at reducing plastic waste, has led to significant changes in consumer behavior, though it varies among different sectors.
A Shift in Demand
While there has been a noticeable decline in orders from large supermarket chains, it was reported that other sectors have maintained their demand. Over at Allswell Polythene, we have seen a 15% decrease in orders mainly from some customers at the retail sector, while demand from other sectors remained stable. In fact, there has been a 10 to 15 percent increase in the demand for trash bag. This shift underscores the complexity of consumer behavior and the need for continued efforts to promote sustainable practices across all sectors.
The Importance of Mindset Change
Consumer behavior expert Hannah Chang pointed out that while the plastic bag charge has initiated a change in norms, mindset shifts take time. As people gradually adapt to bringing their own bags to supermarkets, it becomes clear that these small changes in daily habits can lead to substantial environmental benefits. Six months after the charge was implemented, the government reported a remarkable 50 to 80 percent reduction in plastic bag usage at supermarkets, indicating a positive trend.
Embracing Sustainability
During the interview, we shared about encouraging clients to choose eco-friendly options. Our range of products includes plastic bags and trash bags made from recycled plastic resin. By opting for these sustainable alternatives, our clients can also reduce their environmental footprint. Additionally, other measures taken by Allswell Polythene in our operations has helped lower carbon emissions, enabling us to achieve a Gold Award by Ecovadis for business rating sustainability.
A Collective Effort
As our Business Development Manager, Hannah Tien, mentioned in the interview, “Ultimately, its also not exactly like which kind of material we use that’s the most important, but the end consumers themselves have to exercise proper use of the bags, so as a whole, society can see improvement in how we utilize one-off disposables.” This statement reflects our belief that sustainability is a collective effort. By making conscious choices and promoting responsible use of plastic products, we can all contribute to a greener future.
